Sandman at the Cap and Seoul Survivors at the Eastside

Happy phat bass Tuesday, Mardi Gras, yeehahw y'all
So, I went to the Eastside Club tonight to meet the Grand Inquisitor out of Nowhere to pick up some drum heads. I misplaced the flyer Drew gave me at the gas station food mart the other night.... The Seoul Survivors were playing when I got there. Two saxes, phat bass, guitar, drums, front man singin it seoulfully... awesome. Guess I missed the mellonballer quartet. One of these days I gotta hear them. Seoul Survivors rocked it. Some friends came with face paint and mardi gras beads and gave me a string with a gold bone that says "creme d'etat". Guess that's "cream of the crop", or something like that. Survivors got me dancin' by the speaker. Good good good stuff. I didn't even mind missing the grand inquisitor. Don't know who that is, and who doesn't love a good mystery? And who doesn't love two phat saxes with phat bass and smooth vocals, solid drums and guitar? Know I do.
Night before, or guess it was Saturday night, heard Sandman at the Capitol Theater. Awesome. The man is brilliant. Hip hop to Johnny Cash, he covers the entire gamut. I think that Persian Den of Sin song might have made my girlfriend blush! Awesome. got some cds --- looking forward to playing them... many styles this man covers. He did a rap about Bush and Bin Laden a few years back that was crucial... and he was Slippery Goodstuff around Halloween one year at the Cap. Awesome. Alright, that's enough blogging for one early morning phat tuesday. Lovin' it!

Do you remember how The Doors said they were playing music as an awesome way to get high?

Right now I'm listening to track 1 on the cd I'm not a poet, I'm a liar, from the band if bears were bees .
It has the lyric that is the name of the band. In the liner notes, there is a poem penned by A.A. Milne.
"It's a very funny thought that, if Bears were Bees,
They'd build their nests at the bottom of trees,
And that being so (if Bees were Bears),
We shouldn't have to climb up all these stairs."
-Pooh
I love the lyrics. These guys, at the party the other night, got me high with their music, as the Doors said is done with truly amazing music. I love the lyrics, and the music is beautiful, and the band is together live, as they are on the cd. I bought two copies of the cd. One for me, and the other for a friend.

Among the others wonderful musicians were Allison Millham, The HotShots, and The Well Beings.
Allison Millham played through a looping pedal, keyboard, freeing her to focus on her beautiful vocals.
Here lyrics are thoughtful, deep lyrics. There was a song I thought could be from the viewpoint of a tree.
There was a song asking who lived in your house before you, and who before that.
There was a song that made me feel deeply, with intense lyrics of trying situations for her red headed friend.
It was intense and amazing. Worth the time to hear her sing, if she is near your neighborhood, or you feel like visiting her web page http://www.myspace.com/allisonmilhammusic

The HotShots were Thumpalicious. Pretty loud. At first I had some trouble getting into it. Then I had a couple strong swigs of strong ale. Before I knew it I was head banging and stomping. Good times.

While The Well Beings played I was in the adjoining room, involved in discussions of my opinion that our ideal choice for the Democratic nomination must be The Honorable Congressman Dennis Kucinich for President
with The Honorable Senator Barack Obama as V.P.
Also, we were discussing the power of positive thinking, that is, how we get what we focus on, or as some really rockin' band put it a few years back, "Your prime pre-occupation is where you go."
Meanwhile the sweet sounds of The Well Beings, emanating all through our being.
I came to the party specifically because I love hearing The Well Beings, as well as being in their presence. They are wonderful people, and I enjoy being in their presence.

I also received two copies of the Shel Silverstien Tribute from Alligator Shoes Recordings
One for myself, and one for some friends I told the other day about it . I gave them their copy today. They are stoked.

Later that night I saw a sign on a garden center saying they have honeybees. Ah, if bears were bees.

World Sacred Music Festival and Leonardo Da Vinci

From 5:00p -9:00p on Feb 4th, I attended The 2007 World Sacred Music Festival: a celebration of the sacred
through the uplifting music & dance of the world at The Kenneth J. Minnaert Center for the Arts at South Puget Sound Community College. It was truly amazing. More info on all the artists, and sound clips are available at http://www.olysacredmusic.org/
I purchased 3 cd's:
*** Gansango music & dance presents Ji ***
*** NABY Camara L'union fait la force ***
*** KANE MATHIS & RUSTY KNORR KORA AND PERCUSSION ***

These 3 cd's have been in my 5 disc player with The Blackberry Bushes, and Head for the Hills Bluegrass, ever since I got back from the show, on random. Good times!

Last night I went to PETER DONALDSON's The Life and Times of Leonardo da Vinci at
the STATE THEATER, OLYMPIA. The show is truly amazing. It is also playing tonight and tomorrow, Saturday, is the last night. Go to this show if you can, if you have any interest in history, the Renaissance, the New Renaissance and/or Leonardo da Vinci. It is amazing, and so is the music.

Sunday at 2PM at the theater, Peter Donaldson, and local great minds will be facilitating a discussion on the new renaissance. I plan to be there. I believe it will be free to attend, and amazing.

I love Olympia!

Great music in Olympia

This evening I heard 3 shows, in part.
The first was Mudcat's group at the Iron Rabbit. Amazing music. Takes me to another level. Love it. Want a album.

Then, to the Marina, Tugboat Annie's. Heard Sour Owl and the Toadmen from Outer Space. Truly awesome big sound. 2 saxes, trumpet, bass, drums, guitars. So sweet.

Then, somebody told me that at the Eastside, the Blackberry Bushes were playing the last show with Cera Impala, and I knew I couldn't miss that, so I went to the Eastside to hear the beautiful harmonies. Got 2 albums, "Creatures of Habit", from the Blackberry Bushes, and Head for the Hills Bluegrass Band, "Live at Winston".

Good to see old friends and hear some of my favorite sounds.

There have been several shows that I've neglected to Blog about, until now, including The Well Beings at Le Voyeur a few months ago, which touched my heart,
and Jason Webley at the Capital Theater, which was mind blowing.

Blessings, Love, Good Vibrations.

Peace.

Music under the bridge

Under the bridge early in the Halloween evening, several bands played sweet acoustic music. It was so sweet. The acoustics under the bridge, and the lights, and the bands were terrific. Stomping good time. Lots of wonderful costumes. The Pasties, Grizzle Grazzle Trashcan Band, Shakey Bones, and Hail Seizure (hope that's spelled right). They took turns playing and jammed together some. Fun fun fun. Also, caught the Groundation show at the Capital Theater recently, and also Night of the Living Tribute bands. Both terrific events.

Another beautiful evening in Olympia

Tonight I felt like going downtown to have a beer and hear some music. I went first to Le Voyeur, where I heard Armonikos, from Bellingham. They reminded me of Phish. I enjoyed it, and would have stayed for their whole set if I hadn't known One Nation Undereducated was playing at McCoys. I headed over to McCoys after a while, and O.N.U. was setting up. Tracy gave me a One Nation Undereducated T-Shirt, cuz he said I've been to so many of their shows. It's sweet. Black, with white writing, O.N.U. in sign language, and the URL http://myspace.com/onenationundereducated
. I had a good time listening. Rupert adds a lot on the harmonies and keyboard. Good times. Check 'em. Then I went back to Le Voyeur to hear Audiosattva. They recently added to the bands page, so I had heard some of their music on myspace, and I decided it would be fun to catch 'em live, which was a big part of why I headed for Le Voyeur first tonight. What I caught was good soulful stuff. I look forward to hearing more.

Y'all post blogs now, ya hear

So, I've been very busy lately and haven't blogged about any of my Oly Music experiences.
I will again, but it's an overload hiatus. I know that there is much, tremendously much going on that I am not aware of, and possibly some stuff that it's just not theoretically possible for me to be aware of. If you're reading this, and you want to let people know about your olymusic experiences, we can put a link to your blog on the blogs page and/or help you get blogging if it's something you wanna do.

aight, that's my rant in 2 minutes. Now it's off to class.

Peace, Love and Music.

Grizzle Grazzle last night

I went to the yes yes to hear the grizzle grazzle and it was nice. there was lots of wonderful energy and people dancing, including a bunch youngsters who really started the dancing. esmerelda strange and the one man banjo and jordan o jordan were all lots of fun to listen. They all impressed me with their ability to do so much and rock it solid and interesting. I'm off to voyeur to hear glass elevator now.

A lot has happened since last post!

So, part of the time since my last post has included Spring Break, during which there was a lot of great oly music experienced. On Sunday, April 2nd, there was a benefit for Free Radio Olympia 98.5 FM http://frolympia.org at the Eagles Hall, with 4 and 20 bands, although I counted 6 and 20 off one of the flyers, hmm, let's see... Alright, I've got the program that says Pizza T's Z Kamp Experience, Incendiary, Meru, New Mustache, The Gay Science, Glass Elevator, Governors of Predator, Shadow Guardians, Dance Attack, Station Wagon Revolution, Gyununu and the Science Fun Station, Sundance Kids, Shizuno, Mike Mercker, Yes Please, The Pasties, and Coiler. I play drums with Z Kamp, so I remember that pretty well, from the inside out. It felt like a pretty decent set we did. It took some getting used to the acoustics of the ballroom. Incendiary played after us. I remember they rocked it. Meru felt to me like ocean waves pummeling me while someone grabbed my head and shook it around.. That sounds bad at first, but it was actually quite pleasant and soothing mostly. Add sunlight to the mix and make the ocean caribbean. I think I was somewhere else for a lot of stuff, cuz there were three floors, and all day, and all kinds of stuff happening, so, lemme see, I remember spinning around some during the Glass Elevator set, kicking the hacky-sack around at the tail of the days events while there was some tight raps and beats. Mike Mercker impressed me with how he can make time slow down and draw people into his personal paradigm of time and perception while he plays. The Pasties always make me smile, and they did it again. 'Cept I think I called Judd Jed when I bumped into him early in the day. I know he's Judd, my brain wasn't firing properly at that time I guess. Sorry 'bout that Judd. And Coiler as always played a nice set that made me feel refreshed and contemplative. So, that was Sunday April 2nd experience
Friday March 31st I saw SOUR OWL live @ Tugboat Annies. They rocked it funky with 2 saxophonists and a sweet full band sound.
On Wednesday the 29th 3:00p I played drums with Pizza T's Z-Kamp Experience Live on KAOS 89.3fm
kaosradio.org..
On the 26th I played drums with Pizza T's Z-Kamp Experience 12:00p
Benefit for Rec The Place
w/ the Cool Guys
New Mustache
Pizza T's Z-Kamp Exp.
Bill Skins 5th Will Punch You Right In The Face!

@ the ABC House
That was a lot of fun. It's a great place and the other bands were terrific!
The night before that we played Le Voyeur. It was fun. I wore a suit and blue sunglasses. I couldn't see, there were bright lights. It sounded good at the time, there's no recording, so you'll have to go back in time if you want to hear it.

Some time over Spring Break there was a Gleaners Coalition event at which Fast Rattler played.
I enjoyed the music very much, and highly recommend checking out their music and the Gleaners. Oh, and the StickFigure Strippers rocked it at LeVoyeur, and so did SeaMonster.

Analog Imagination(is now Kairos Time) was great at Le Voyeur Thurs. Feb 2nd, and so was Fast Rattler

I made a long and eloquent post about how wonderful the show was, how fast and tastefully Darius played, how talented and terrific and enjoyable.... and then the blogger window I was writing crashed. Phooey. That was a couple days ago... busy busy... in fact I've gotta run, and I was interrupted 4 times just trying to write this paragraph... anyhow, Fast Rattler is playing tonight at the Capitol Theater, at the Utah Phillips show. I believe it will be a good time! Don't forget to check out the http://www.myspace.com/kairostime and listen to music from the show

Pat MacDonald played an awesomely heavy show at The Iron Rabbit last night.

Pat MacDonald played an awesomely heavy show at The Iron Rabbit last night. As a friend I was sitting with commented, he sounds like a four or even five piece band at times. He plays guitar and sings, but he's always hitting deep bass note lines along with all the guitar work. The guitar sounds like a synthesizer sometimes, at the same time as sounding like a guitar and bass. Add to this the stompboard that translates his foot stomps into bass and snare drum like sounds with his foot stomping out the beat regular and heavy like a deep shamanic rock trance, all timed perfectly with the guitar and add to this 4 piece at times the harmonica, and the clean, well defined vocals - we were wowed. we just went, "wow" and looked at each other and got back into it. And that's not to even mention the character of the songs - Pat evokes vivid images with his lyrics, look - you've gotta check the music for yourself. This is the man responsible for "The Future's So Bright I gotta wear Shades!"

Just got back from a nice night of music downtown

Yeah, I didn't plan on shows tonight except entertaining a notion of going to hear the Pasties at Yes Yes, however, I went to the Eastside Club to shoot a little pool and discovered that Trolls Cottage would be playing soon. I played some of their tracks on the jukebox and decided the $5 cover would be worth it. I've heard their name around for years, but this is the first time I've actually checked 'em out. They're like mellow reggae, definitely danceable and catchy. When I stepped out to smoke a cigarette, a trumpeter walked by and said they were going to play at Yes Yes (The Pasties). For some reason, maybe it was the beers I drank, my head muddled, and I went to Le Voyeur instead of Yes Yes, and asked someone if The Pasties played yet. Ironically they said that, yes, they had already played. A band that I think is called Kathryn Hepburn's Voice played. They were good. They had a looper or boomerang pedal or something that let them get a riff going and make it loop so they could jump on another instrument. They had nice harmonies a few times, and overall I really dug their vibe. I think they're out of Seattle. When they got done I ordered some fries and went to see how things were going Eastside, since the fries would take 20 minutes, and that's how long the next band, Heyoka would take to set up at Le Voyeur. I went over and had a good mellow foot tapping time at The Eastside for 20 minutes, and got back to Le Voyeur in time to hear Heyoka play their first tune, I believe it was March of the Sugarplum Fairies. One of them told me that their style of music is Symphonic, with both classical and rock music being fair game. They set up lights of their own and the house lights were out. Atmosphere. Smoke machine. That first tune they played is one classical piece that is so catchy that I find it in my head fairly regularly, although I doubt that I've heard it since watching looney tunes as a kid, until this evening. Since I paid a cover at the Trolls Cottage show, and I am slightly partial to reggae if forced to choose between genres, I ducked back to the Eastside. Hung out for a bit and then headed back for more Heyoka. This time they were into something that made me feel in a rave state of mind, combined with the red lighting they had. It was interesting. Then I bounced back to the Eastside for a while, then back to Le Voyeur to hear FeedBackarach My first thought as they began to play was that they remind me of Ben Folds Five sans keyboard, as far as how the music is arranged and the tonality of the vocals. Definitely enjoyable. After a while I went back to the Trolls Cottage show. About 1:30 I felt that the beers from earlier had worn off thanks to water and fries consumed, and that it might be a good time to go home, blog while it's fresh, and to bed with me. The music they were playing as I left was very enjoyable, making it tempting to stay longer, but it's always nice to leave on a good note, so that I will remember it that way.
Thanks to all the musicians I heard tonight for showing us that you have a lot of heart, soul, talent, and pizazz.

Artesian Underground and High Ceiling at 4th Ave Tav last night

Last night we were fortunate to catch the last show from Artesian Underground (formerly known as OldHwy99). Todd told me there is a new project in the works that we can look forward to. Todd is one of the guitar playing singer/songwriters in the group. He is the guitar tech at Capital City Guitars. Before Artesian Underground he played with a band called Three. It was a good show last night. They got me drumming on the table and trancing out on some of the songs. High Ceiling also put on a terrific show, what we caught of it. I think we caught about the last half of their set. We didn't sit down on the way in, because the music kept us on our feet as we arrived.

I'm very much looking forward to the show at Le Voyeur tonight, partly 'cause I'm playing and partly cause I can't wait to hear the other musicians.

It's so hard to keep it real and keep it updated!

Seriously@)%!!~!! I made a few other very lengthy updates where the computer or browser crashed, and it put me off for a while, but I guess I'm back. Also, it has felt like a chore to get it updated with all the school-work I've had. Now that it has been break for a while I feel more chance to breathe. Now I'm making use of the 'Save as Draft' button. Man - there have been so many things and shows and whatnot going on, it's hard just to dive in and start somewhere. I guess recent additions to the site - Hospital Haunts   Field of Wires   Soloflock   The Satin Machine   Ruxton Towers   The Whore Moans   Very Delicious   The Barnacles   Emnity   The Speed Of Darkness   Meru   Mike Mercker   Ticklish Tuesday   Nononsense   Fires All Around   One Band Clapping

Also, southsounds.net is a great new addition to the resource page

There have been some terrific shows I have pictures from including Watermelon Sugar at Tugboats on Halloween, and others. I plan to get back to this, I'm publishing it for now so there's something recent published!
