Saturday night I went to the Locust Street Taxi CD release party at The Matrix for their new Live Cd "Out of the Tree". This CD has a lot of my favorite LST songs on it, including Mister Carter, The Cow Song, The Rap, Red Head, and also has LST covering the Muppets Theme Song. The show was awesome. All the band members I ever knew about were there playing, and some that I didn't know about, like the first original drummer. The interplay between trumpet and trombone made me feel so happy. They were on another plane. Musically, and creatively, these guys are the best I know of. They are generally light hearted, the songs make me feel good, and force me to dance. My thing about dancing to music is, sometimes you go to a show, and the second the band starts, people start to dance, whether there is any groove yet or not, and you know that they came to dance, and they don't really care if the music makes them move or not, 'cause they're gonna move. Me, I am not like that. I will sit there like a lump 'til the music actually rocks me to a semi upright gyrating position. And let me just say that LST rocks me to a semi upright gyrating position. It started with the foot tapping, and then I had to drum on my knees, and then my head was getting bopped back and forth by the alternating blasts from the trumpet and trombone, and Darick's basslines generally rumble me to a slightly levitated state to begin with, and anyhow, catch this band anytime and every time you get the chance. You will be pleased.

Went to the A-Kamp and One Nation Undereducated show on Thursday night at McCoys.
The first song A-Kamp did really reminded me of the Grateful Dead a lot. I like those guys.
They are fun. They did the most rockin version of frosty the snowman i've ever heard, and actually dedicated it to me and Alex and our families and friends. I was sure they were going to play their olymusic song that I keep hearing about when they said they were dedicating a song, but then it was frosty, but it was all good, because it was the best frosty ever. they played the olymusic song at the end of their set, but i was foolishly purchasing a beer at the bar, unaware that the song was in motion, only knowing that there were some catchy riffs in the air, but not tuned in to the lyrics. the song came to an end just as i was coming back to the area where i could successfully catch the lyrics. friends were hooting and howling with bright eyes and Alex flashed me a smile and someone asked what i thought of the olymusic song, and i was all "damn! you mean i missed it!!??!!??!"
I'll have to move in with those guys to hear it I guess. One thing I didn't know is that Lars is playing drums with A-Kamp. Cool!
One Nation Undereducated was loud, intense, music with drive. I was compelled to ask Tracy what sort of FX he is using, because there were some awesome sounds coming from his guitar. He showed me a Big Muff, and another distortion pedal, and that was it! He said he does lots with harmonics, and that has to have been what I heard. Great technique. Those guys are pretty tight, definitely rockin, and as I said, they make some sounds that I haven't heard before. Check em out if you get the chance. Rock on Olympia! Oh, and one of the guys from Sesame Street Gangsters gave me a flyer with a mostly naked Santa Claus that I'm planning to scan in soon!

Went to Franco's Open mic at Jordan Emily's again tonight. Such talented people get up and do their thing! This is the 3rd time I've headed over there for this, and I've been very happy that I did every time. Also had breakfast there this morning. They have vegetarian biscuits and gravy, which is something Amanda can't resist. Also grits. The broccoli in the veggie omelette I had was so crisp and delicious, you must try it. Amanda had a eggs her way, which meant the breakfast burrito turned into a mexi-omelette. We shared the biscuits and gravy. The hash-browns were good. But enough about breakfast, this is about music, but music is what got me there in the first place so that I knew I would like to go eat breakfast there. Anyhow, I got a flyer , and one of Franco's "It's Franco!" CD's which I just listened to and enjoyed. There are some new songs on there that I haven't heard him sing solo or with Locust Street Taxi yet. The poetry and music at this open mic was too intense for me to describe accurately. It has been all along. I think I heard someone read a poem about burning Bush - going after him with torches like the villagers do in the Frankenstein movie type thing. The life affirming joy in some of the songs people are singing makes me feel good. So does Jordan Emily's ice cream and cheesecake with blueberry compote (I think that's what the warm blueberry sauce is called) poured over top, and some hot coffee. Ah.

Last night when I got done work I went straight to the Capital Theatre to catch the show at the backstage that Leon House was promoting and playing during band setup time. It was a cool show. There were somethin like 50 or more high school age looking folks singing along with Leon - they all know the words to his songs! I was like Wow, that's Awesome! Plus he was wearing a really nice tripped out tie-die with all four beatles on it. I enjoyed the bands a lot too. I think I missed tracing8 and ginger vitus, but I'm not sure which band was which. There was a lot of thrash dancing and people were definitely having a good time. A band that's a married couple from Seattle played guitar and percussion with some great harmonies and amusing lyrics about science and syphilis and stuff. The band before them rocked too. I was really hungry 'cause I hadn't had any dinner, so I stepped out for pizza at Old School, which took forever for them to get my slice hot, so I had a beer, and then after eating decided to go check for my buds over at McCoy's, and they convinced me to have a beer there, and then we decided to go to the show, but we got somehow pulled into the EastSide - after a little bit I was like "We should go back to the show" and they were like "Dude, the shows over" and I was all "D'oh!". Anyhow, I enjoyed what I caught. Peace.

I got home from work and there was a note to come to the 6 piece funk band show at Le Voyeur, so I was going to catch the next bus down, but there isn't a 9:37 going downtown, so hitch-hiked from the bus-stop along with a gal who was in the same predicament. Got to Le Voyeur in time to hear Sarah P. sing a couple beatiful songs, and then heard a band that was just excellent. I didn't catch their name, but it started with a D. Wait a sec, the Le Voyeur show calendar tells me their name is dLand. They were awesome! They got the place dancing. They brought at least one amazing crystal and candles with the OM symbol on the side and very pleasing tapestries that were hung around the place. It was the best I have ever seen Le Voyeur. It was a good crowd too. There was a keyboard and drumkit session that jazz rocked. I think the keyboard guy was named Leon, and the drummer may have been Jamie, but I am not absolutely sure. There was a band with guitar and keyboard that sang a song about "being here for beer", which was well recieved. Nice effects and good beats from the keyboard, and the helmet with a microphone affixed to it was a nice touch. Members of Scream Club and A-Kamp were amongst the crowd. As I was moseying around there was a guy who said we could never have peace because people are a blight or something, and I had to say about how when a flock of birds changes direction they just do it, and somehow they all know when they're going to head another way - and that people being like birds in that way has me feeling that peace is possible. Anyhow, I was kind of tired because I had been awake for a long time, so we caught a ride cross-town with a good person who offered us a lift. Was sorry not to stay for Mac Dawg and the Human JukeBox. Have seen them put on a rockin' show at Le Voyeur. Was also sorry to get there too late to hear the beautiful singer and songwriter Taryn Goodman. Sleepy now. G'night.

Ran into Dee Kamp, the trumpet player from A-Kamp on the bus this morning. Planning to go to their show at McCoy's on the 18th of this month. Also thinking I'll head to the backstage at the Capital Theatre this Friday to see The Bands: The Nobodys, Ginger Vitus, Tracing8, Tales From The Birdbath... With Leon House inbetween bands. I'd like to hear Sara and Taryn up at Evergreen, but I don't get off work 'til 8pm, and wouldn't be able to get cross-town 'til 9, so I guess I can't make it to that one. If I'm lucky I'll get to hear them again at Jordan Emily's on Sunday.
